Want to write for Litro?
We began as a free pamphlet featuring just one short story, then a pocket-sized magazine of a handful of short stories for the reading pleasure of London commuters.
Today, we are still a humble magazine—still free—but since May this year we have also been developing as a full-fledged online platform for fiction and nonfiction writing, and reflective commentary on literature, arts and culture. We welcome new, emerging and established writers from all over the world, so write for us, or tell us about you and your work and we might feature it, or have a chat with you. We'd really like to get to know you.
You can submit your work to any of our platforms: print, online, and for our podcast,Litro Lab. Work published in the print magazine will also be published online.
Litro Magazine
For our print magazine, we only accept themed short fiction, nonfiction, and original artwork. Novel excerpts and translated works are also welcome. Each piece no longer than 3,000 words.
We do publish poetry, but only on a commissioned basis, so please do not submit any poetry to us as they will not be read.
Upcoming themes:
- Magic (December 2012) — Submit here.
Themes for 2013 will be announced soon.
Litro Online
What we run:
- Open-themed short fiction (#StorySunday) and longform nonfiction (#SaturdayEssay)—the latter including but not limited to personal essays, travel dispatches and narrative journalism on any subject. Novel excerpts and translated works are also welcome. Submit here.
- Features and reviews spanning literature, arts and culture. We are not primarily a journal for critical writing but we do welcome informed and reflective commentary (they can also be unabashedly personal). Experimentation with form and genre is encouraged and we are particularly interested in writing that explore the grey areas between literature and art, and also literature and culture, i.e. the connections between literature & travel, literary & fashion, literature & food, etc. that help us "see" literature in our real world. Submit features here; reviews here.
- Columns: We are looking for columnists. Have an idea on literature/writing, travel, film, music, or art that you can sustain for at least three months, with at least a piece every fortnight? Pitch us.
- Communal columns you can submit to at the moment: Share a Short Story (see examples). Submit here.
- Interviews: If you like to talk to people and explore issues in depth, pitch us. Interviews can be done in person, via Skype, phone, or email—or any other more creative way you can think of.
- "Writer-in-Residence"—virtually, of course. Our next theme is Africa so we are looking for a writer of African descent or someone who writes about Africa. Writers must have already published at least their first book or collection of short stories (fiction or nonfiction). It would entail writing a column-like piece every week for a month—but the four pieces don't have to be related in any way nor do they have to connect to the theme "Africa"; they can be on any subject that we'd conceivably publish on Litro generally. Pitch us.
- Photo Essays or Comic Series—Submit here.
At this time, we do not accept poetry submissions.
How to Submit:
Completed piecesIf you already have a completed piece that can fit into any of our existing categories, please submit here. If you haven't yet build up many writing samples, it would be best to submit to us a completed piece. If we publish it, you can start pitching to us.

Litro Lab
We produce our own podcasts but we are also happy to receive standalone readings of fiction and nonfiction works not longer than five minutes in total. Submit here.
If you have an idea for a podcast episode, or you'd like to introduce us to someone to be a guest on our show, please get in touch with Producer Emily Cleaver.
Terms & Conditions
All submitted work must be your own.
All submitted work must be previously unpublished. (The only exception is Litro Lab, where you can submit an audio reading of your story, even if it has been published elsewhere, providing you have the rights to.)
Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but we ask that you withdraw your submission from Litro immediately when your piece has been accepted elsewhere.
By submitting your work to the magazine you give us first print rights, and the right to reprint your work on the internet and in digital form.
We ask that once your work is published in Litro that you do not post the piece on your blog in its entirety. Please just post an excerpt and direct your readers to your Litro article.
Regrettably, we are unable to pay our contributors at present.
What happens next?
It may take us anytime from two weeks to three months to accept or reject your submission. If you haven't heard from us, you can assume we're still considering your work. We also receive too many submissions to be able to offer individual feedback on rejected work.
If you have any questions about the submissions process, or if you're not sure where your work fits in, please contact Litro Online Editor at emily.ding@litro.co.uk.
