Bloody Scotland’s Short Story Competition is back for 2014.
Scotland’s International Crime Writing festival supports and promotes the best crime writing from around the world, including emerging writers and exciting new voices. Bloody Scotland want to seek out a celebrate the most skilled and creative new crime writers from around the world.
We invite writers to from anywhere in the world to demonstrate their skill in short-story writing by entering a story, for a chance to win a brilliant prize and be recognised as an exciting emerging talent in the crime genre.
We’re seeking exceptional crime short stories based on the theme of ‘ESCAPE’.  You can interpret the theme of in any way that inspires you, but we are looking for work that is crime themed.  Entries are accepted from anywhere in the world, but must be written in English.
Prizes
The winner will receive a £1,000 prize, a weekend pass to the 2014 festival and a bottle of Deanston whisky, during a prize-giving event at the festival. Bloody Scotland 2014 takes place from Friday 19th – Sunday 21st September in Stirling.
In addition, two runners up will receive a bottle of Deanston whisky and a selection of tickets for events at Bloody Scotland 2014.
The winning entry will be published as an ebook short by Bloody Scotland.
Entering
Stories should be a maximum of 3,000 words and must be submitted by midnight on 31st July 2014. There is an entry fee of £10 to cover the administration of the competition.
A prestigious judging panel comprising representatives from the University of Stirling and crime writers Alex Gray, Craig Robertson and Gordon Brown, will judge the entries and announce a shortlist.  This shortlist will then be open for a public vote on the Bloody Scotland website.

Entry Terms and Conditions
1. The Bloody Scotland Short Story Competition 2014 is open to all previously unpublished short fiction in the world, but all entries must be submitted in the English language.
2. Works must be submitted by the author of the work and in entering entrants are asserting that the work is their own and does not duplicate or borrow from any other work, published or unpublished, unless clearly cited.
3. You must warrant that your entry does not infringe any law or regulation or third party right, including (but not limited to) the law of copyright or trademarks.
4.The work must be previously unpublished, which includes in print, e-book, online, personal websites, blogs etc.
5. When you enter, you retain full copyright over your work but you grant us a non-exclusive license to publish your work – if selected as a winning entry – in a short story anthology e-book. This e-book will be distributed free of charge and no royalties will be payable to you. You will be clearly identified as the author of any published work in the e-book and must agree to this publicity. You can, however, use a pseudonym if you wish.
6. Maximum length is 3,000 words.
7. All entries should be clearly presented. Clear fonts are preferred at at least 12pt. size. We accept documents in PDF and WordDoc format. Please number the pages and put your name and title of the story on each page of the document.
8. Entries are to be submitted online for consideration by midnight on Thursday 31st 2014.
9. Submission of an entry is taken as acceptance of the terms and conditions stated here.
10. Entries can only be submitted online at [website link]. Entries submitted in any other form will not be accepted.
11. An entry fee of £10 or the equivalent in your local currency (as determined by PayPal at the point of payment) is required per submission. If your payment is unsuccessful for any reason, your entry will not be considered. All proceeds will go towards the administration of the competition, the prizes themselves, and the publication of an e-book anthology of the best submissions. Any surplus will be carried forward to help fund next year’s festival.
12. The competition will be judged by a panel consisting of representatives selected by Bloody Scotland. All decisions made by the panel will be final.
13. Incomplete entry forms and short stories that do not adhere to the terms and conditions stated here will not be eligible for consideration.
14. The prizes will be presented to the winner over the weekend of the Bloody Scotland Festival 2014, 19th– 21th September. Hence it is assumed that in submitting a short story to the competition, the entrant is aware that the prizes will be announced and awarded during these dates. However, if you cannot be there in person, we will make arrangements to deliver the prize to you.
15. Prizes are non-negotiable and no cash alternative will be offered. The weekend pass to Bloody Scotland does not include travel to Stirling or accommodation. If the winner cannot make it to this year’s festival, their weekend pass can be deferred for the Bloody Scotland Festival 2015.
Entry Criteria
You must be aged 18 years or older. Proof of age may be required. The purpose of this competition is to encourage new talent so we are restricting entry to previously unpublished writers. You may not enter is you have a full-length work (novel, novella, short story collection) published in print or electronically, or broadcast on television or radio, or performed on stage commercially. However, if you have self-published in print or electronically, or if you have created a publishing company to self-publish, you may enter.
