Jac Jemc lives in Chicago where she writes fiction and poetry. Her first novel, My Only Wife (Dzanc Books) was named a finalist for the 2013 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction and winner of the Paula Anderson Book Award. Her first full-length collection of stories, A Different Bed Every Time, was released in October 2014, also from Dzanc. A chapbook of stories, This Stranger She’d Invited In, was made available from Greying Ghost Press in March 2011. Jac’s nonfiction was featured on the long list for Best American Essays 2014 and her story “Women in Wells” was featured in the 2010 Best of the Web anthology. Jac received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has completed residencies at Ragdale and the Vermont Studio Center. She is the Web Nonfiction Editor for Hobart and Poetry Editor atdecomP. She has served as a guest editor ofLittle White Poetry Journaland worked as a reader at Our Stories and The Means. In 2012 she was the recipient of an Illinois Arts Council Professional Development Grant and in 2014 she was named as one of 25 Writers to Watch by the Guild Literary Complex.
Submit via Submittable. Work must not be published in HFR. Recommended length: 20,000 words. This is a FICTION chapbook contest. The entry fee is $10. Due to the space constraints of a literary journal, only one winner will be selected by the final judge and then published in the issue. The winner and finalists will be announced on the HFR website on MARCH 1, 2014, and the finalists will receive special mention in the issue. The winner will receive a $250 prize, a print copy of the issue, an HFR t-shirt, and a lifetime digital subscription to HFR. Please don’t include identifying information in your submission. Deadline: FEBRUARY 15, 2014.

Save submissions as one document (doc, docx, rtf, txt, jpg, or png). Submit via Submittable. Cover letters are encouraged, but not required. HFR reads year-round and debuts four issues a year. Only one submission at a time: the editors will get to your work as fast as they can. Allow 30-90 days for a response, inquire after 120, although we pride ourselves in responding sooner. Simultaneous submissions are allowed. Please notify us immediately if your submitted work has been accepted for publication elsewhere. HFR does not accept work that has been previously published elsewhere (excluding chapbook features). Upon acceptance, HFRtakes first serial rights to the work. Upon publication, all rights revert back to the author. Should the accepted work appear elsewhere after its publication in HFR, be sure to list HFR as its original publisher.HFR is unable to pay contributors. Contributors receive a print copy and digital, DRM-free copies of the issue in which they are published, and a lifetime digital subscription to the journal.
