Visual inspiration!
Visual inspiration!
The many-tentacled beast that lives under Burnside Bridge. The break in the space-time continuum hidden in the back corner of the Vacuum Cleaner Museum. Spacemen and sasquatches, mad scientists and devils. We’re looking for short stories that take the tropes and turn them on their ear. Smart stories that honor the fiendish whimsy of old pulp magazines like Weird Talesand Amazing Stories—but also surprise with their depth and complexity. All pieces must take place in Portland, Oregon, or be connected to the city in a meaningful way.
The open submission period will run from February 1 to May 15, 2015. Editor Gigi Little, Forest Avenue Press’s graphic designer, is responsible for the striking visual impact of all of our titles.
“Gigi is one of the most creative, artistic people I know,” said Publisher Laura Stanfill. “Her covers are breathtakingly original, and I’m so thrilled she approached us with the idea for this fun, kitschy, Portland-centric collection. While we’re opening for national novel submissions for the first time next year, we’re excited to collaborate with Gigi while honoring our regional roots.”
Gigi’s fiction and essays have appeared in books and literary magazines, including Portland Noir, The Pacific Northwest Reader, Thumbnail Magazine and Spent: Exposing Our Complicated Relationship With Shopping. She is currently curating a collection of flash fiction for the book The Untold Gaze from Ekphrasis Books.
Submitters must use our Submittable page to share a query letter and a story; one entry per person, please. Anything sent directly to Forest Avenue Press via email or our website contact page will be disqualified. Maximum length we’re looking for in stories is 6,000 words, and there is no minimum, as we’d love to include some flash pieces. Contributors will receive two free copies of the book. Forest Avenue Press will engage in its usual publicity efforts to promote the collection, including sending out advance copies for review, submitting press releases, and organizing readings to showcase the authors and their work.
