Submission Guidelines

There are only a few guidelines for submitting your work to The Novella Award.
We are open to and welcoming of any genre of work, provided it is fiction, in the English Language and between 20,000 and 40,000 words.
Other than that, please remember to:
  • Word process your work, and send it by email as a word document or hard-copy by post
  • Use a clear font such as Courier, Courier New, Times New Roman, Arial or Lucida Grande
  • Please use size 12 font and double-space your work
  • In a separate document, you should include a cover sheet with your:
    • Name
    • Address
    • Email
    • Telephone Number
    • Name of the Novella
    • Word Count of the Novella
  • Your name should not be featured on the manuscript of your novella or anywhere throughout.
  • When emailing your novella please put your full name and the name of your novella in the subject line, e.g. James Joyce – The Dead

How to Enter

We want as many fantastic writers as possible to enter this year’s Novella Award, so to make that possible, here are our instructions on how to enter:
First things first, make sure you have looked at our Terms & Conditions and Submission Guidelines. It is very important that you follow our guidelines, as it could affect your submission.
Your novella can be sent to use either online or by post
 Entry fee is £17
To enter online:
 There are 2 parts you must complete. Payment and Entry.
To pay, please go to the LJMU Online Shop by clicking here.
Purchase a ‘ticket’ to enter The Novella Award, and follow the payment instructions on the LJMU Shop website.
Then, to enter, email your novella to thenovellaaward@ljmu.ac.uk
Novellas must be sent to us as a word document, with a cover sheet attached in a separate document. Details are on our submission guidelines page.
Novellas sent to us without receiving payment through the Online Shop WILL NOT be considered for the award. Please ensure that you purchase both the ticket, and email your novella.

If you are entering by post, please include a cover sheet, as detailed in our guidelines, and a cheque with your novella’s manuscript.
The cheque should be addressed to Liverpool John Moores University and the amount made out should £17.
Please remember, novellas sent to us without a cheque addressed to the above, and for the above amount, WILL NOT be considered for the award
