Marketings Jobs at Penguin/Random House. Deadline: April 10

The Scheme

About that word we wanted….

Since you’ve joined us here, it looks like you’re ready to come on an adventure with us.

Our world is changing - it has been for some time. When Penguin and Random House joined forces in 2013, we created a powerhouse that invests in and nurtures creative talent - and then markets that talent. We launch 2,000 start-ups a year – they are called books – and we believe that by connecting these stories to readers we can help to transform people’s lives.

That’s where The Scheme comes in – and you too. We want to hear from different voices and see fresh perspectives, so we’ve created this marketing programme – an experience open to everyone, whatever your educational background may happen to be. We are looking for potential and we know that it comes in many forms.

Now that we’ve got your attention, look around and stay tuned – we’ll share more with you here over the next few weeks, giving you a sneak peek inside our house.

Ready to tell us what you’ve got to say? Start your application now

Have a question? Ask us now

You’ve got until: 10 April 2015

What can we offer you?

We’ve promised you a marketing experience to remember. You can expect hard work, creativity and the chance to work with brilliant people and brilliant minds. You’ll be working in the teams who delivered campaigns for Fifty Shades of Grey, The Fault in Our Stars, H is for Hawk, The Girl on the Train, Jamie’s Comfort Food, How to Build a Girl, A Delicate Truth, and Little Black Classics, to name but a few.

You’ll be working with the best in the business and we’d love you to roll up your sleeves and join them. You’ll have a chance to work on some amazing campaigns – whether it’s finding the best way to shout about the next exciting debut, thinking about how we can make the most out of our mega star brand authors or cutting a path to a different audience for some of our more familiar voices.

It could be food, fiction or real life adventures.  Whatever you are working on, you’ll be talking about stories and ideas – whether that’s with words, pictures, videos or in 140 characters. Be sure to check out the blogs from each of our publishing divisions over the next few weeks as we’d love to share more of what we do with you.

We know that not everyone will have worked in a place like ours before and that this may turn out to be your first job in an office. That’s okay, we’ll help set you up as best we can with a tailored induction to our house, making sure that we give you the support you need to successfully prepare for your adventure. You’ll get the chance to know your fellow adventurers a little better too, as we treat you to a whistle-stop tour of publishing, introducing you to our different sites, divisions and colleagues, ensuring that you get a bird’s eye view of our exciting world.

We are hoping that you’ll bring an eclectic mix of experience and perspectives and so we’ll ask our in-house Learning & Development team to work with each of you to create your own personal development plan. We’d like to offer you a mentor too, someone to bounce ideas off and who can provide you with some wise words and wisdom as you settle in. In between your two placements, there’ll be a break and a chance for more training. We’re quite keen on that.

Our publishing divisions have their own distinct personalities and identity which means that you’ll have the chance to demonstrate your adaptability as we mix things up a little after six months and offer you a new challenge, marketing a new range of books, working with a new bunch of people. We wouldn’t want you to get bored.

And you’ll probably be wanting to know about this good stuff too.

How much do I get paid?  £21,000 a year, plus you’ll qualify for a great all-round flexible package which includes 25 days’ holiday a year, a technology purchase scheme, discounted gym membership and much more.

When do I start? 1st September 2015. You’ll be with us for 13 months which gives us enough time to get to know one another a little better, before you get on with the thinking, making and doing in your two six month marketing placements.

Where will I be based? You’ll work across our three London sites at the Strand, Pimlico and Ealing.

How many places are there on The Scheme? We are looking for four new adventurers to join us this year.

What comes next? We’ll have everything crossed that we’ve found our marketers of tomorrow. We think it’s quite likely that we will have.

Who are we?

We’re Penguin Random House, the world’s favourite book publisher and home to many authors you’ll have heard of (and many more you probably haven’t – that’s okay, we’ve got a lot of authors).

In 2013, we made history by bringing together Penguin Books and Random House to create the first truly global trade book publishing company.

We find the very best stories from the very best minds, and then connect them to as many people as possible. We nurture creative talent, and then market that talent.  That is what we are all about.

Publishing used to follow a linear model. Today, things work very differently. We work with a wide range of talent – from animators and developers, to toy manufacturers and producers – which means that we act more like broadcasters as we find new ways to tell our stories and different ways to capture the attention of the world for the stories, ideas and writing that matter.

Collaboration, creativity and experimentation form part of our daily lives and routines. We want everyone to do the best work of their lives as we make and publish extraordinary books together.

We all have a role to play in creating this distinct culture – you too. We think it’s a special place to be, and here’s why. At Penguin Random House, we value:

Purpose: Making the world a better place, in both big and small ways

Adventure: Growing ourselves and our business

Openness: Sharing, listening and always curious

Trust: Believing in one another to do the best we can

Heart: Caring for one another, our authors, books and readers

Who are you?

Do you like to think, make and do?

We are looking for new and interesting voices to help us connect the very best stories, ideas and writing with as many people as possible. For this, you’ll need:

Passion for our purpose: we want to make the world a better place, in both big and small ways, and so you’ll need to understand and demonstrate how you, and the role you play within Marketing, can contribute to this purpose.
Ideas and the ability to make them happen: we thrive on ideas and you’ll need lots of them, along with the positivity, initiative, tenacity and pragmatism needed to bring them alive.

To be digitally minded and social-media savvy: so that you can masterfully create and curate content for your audience.
Curiosity: because whilst you’ll be learning lots of new things and will be immersed in our world, we’ll also want you to bring your knowledge of the outside in and offer us a new way of seeing and doing things.

Ambition: we want to be the best publisher, raising the bar on excellence and breaking new ground which means that you’ll need to aim high, take some risks, make some mistakes and keep your confidence.
To be persuasive and adaptable: For us, the two go hand in hand. You’ll need to be convincing both in your written and spoken word so as to engage your colleagues, authors and readers, whilst also adaptable enough to accept challenges to your ideas and changes to your plans.

The detail

Here’s what you’ll need to do to apply and the steps we’ll be taking to find our marketers of tomorrow.

Step One: Your online application
We are really looking forward to getting to know you. But we don’t want to use a boring old CV to do this. Instead, we’ve thought of seven questions that we’d really like to know your answers to (take a look at ‘Who are you?’).

You’ll submit your answers through our simple online form. The questions will be on there too, but we thought you might like a heads up on what we’ll be asking you so you can start thinking about what you’ll say.
Here are the questions (please keep your answers to a maximum of 300 words - copy and paste them into a Word document if you need to check this!):
1.       Tell us why you’d like to be part of The Scheme.
Consider what we do at Penguin Random House and why you would want to market our books and ideas. Word limit: 300 words
2.       Choose one of the best ideas you’ve had and tell us why you think it’s good and how you brought it to life. How would you improve it next time?
Consider how your example demonstrates your creativity, initiative and ability to translate an idea into something tangible and useful. How could you make it even better?Word limit: 300 words
3.       Whose social media presence do you most admire and why? How does this influence your own social media activity?
Consider how your choice demonstrates that you are social media-savvy and understand which voices translate well and have appeal. Share how you are an active user social media. Word limit: 300 words
4.       Which recent marketing campaign has made you sit up and take notice? What could we learn from this at Penguin Random House?
Consider which campaign you can use that’s different and cutting edge. Think about why the example you’ve chosen is relevant and useful to Penguin Random House. Word limit: 300 words
5.       Share with us your biggest success to date. What’s next?
Consider how you can demonstrate your ability to aim high and push boundaries.  Show how you took some risks, learnt from your mistakes and kept your confidence. And still want more. Word limit: 300 words
6.       Tell us what your favourite story is (it could be from a book, a film, a play, a song, a tv programme) and why we should experience it too.
Consider how you can persuade us to read/see/hear your recommendation – how compelling can you be?  Word limit: 300 words
7.       What’s the best piece of advice you’ve even been given and how have you used it to your advantage?
Consider how you can demonstrate that you are adaptable enough to accept feedback and use it to make a positive change. Word limit: 300 words
When you are ready to submit your answers, click here to complete your application form.
You’ll need to complete the form in one sitting (if you can’t do this, make sure to save your answers into a Word document in advance so that you can copy and paste). Click submit when you are ready to send it and you’ll receive a response from us acknowledging your application. Thank you very much!

You’ve got until midnight on 10 April 2015.

We’ll then spend the next few weeks reading your responses as we don’t want to leave you hanging on. By the way, ‘we’ are a team of experienced recruiters at Penguin Random House who love what we do and who are very excited to be launching The Scheme.

As much as we’d like everyone to join us, we only have four places on offer so we’ll be sure to pay careful attention to your answers and will be working hard to decide who we’d like to take forward to the next round.

We’ll be back in touch with you, either way, by Tuesday 5 May to let you know if you’ve made it through to the next stage or if, sadly, our journey ends here. It needn’t be the end of the road, though - be sure to check out our careers site where you can find out about what else we have to offer, including our brilliant summer internship programme – which is open for applications until 7 April.

Step Two: Creative brief and video interview

We are really keen that you get the chance to show us what you can do. For this second stage, we’ll give you a creative brief to think about and we’ll then ask you to share your ideas with us via a video interview. The interview will take no longer than 30 minutes – with around 10 minutes of this for you to share your ideas and the rest for us find out a little more about you.

There are a couple of important things to note here. Please don’t spend longer than two hours preparing for the brief – we know many of you will be frantically revising and preparing for exams. The second is not to be put off by the thought of a video interview – you’ll have done all the key thinking ahead of this and it’s just a case of sharing your ideas with us in the privacy of your own home using your smart phone, tablet or a good old fashioned computer. Before each interview question, there’ll also be 30 seconds (loads of time!) to prepare before filming your answer.

We’ll let you know on 5 May if you’ve made it to this stage and you’ll then have until 12 May to share your answers.

Following this, we’ll let you know if you’ve made it through to the final stage by 5 June 2015.

Step Three: Two day selection event

So, you are nearly there.

We’d like to have the chance to show you what we do and where we do it. We’ll invite you to our offices in London and ask our publishing teams to spend some time with you so that you can see the sorts of books and ideas you’ll be working on, across our three London sites.

We’ll then have an informal dinner together before you head back to your hotel room. The dinner and the hotel are on us, by the way.

The next day, you’ll return to our Pimlico offices where we’ll have a fun day together, getting to know one another a little better through interviews and some individual and group exercises. Don’t worry, we’ll let you know nearer the time exactly what to expect.

And then you can relax after all your hard work and we’ll come back to you by 17 July to let you know whether you’ve got a place on The Scheme.

We can’t wait to hear from you - Good luck!
