Short Story Competition

There are free retreat places, discounts off the booking fee and the chance to get published on offer in the Retreat West Short Story competition. Winners get a free place at Retreat West Exeter and runners up get a £10 discount off of the booking fee.
International entrants that cannot make the retreats (or those in the UK unable to travel to Exeter) will receive a £20 Amazon voucher for first place while the runners up will get a £10 Amazon voucher.
Each year the winning stories will be e-published in a short story collection and winners will receive a share of the profits (details below in the Competion Rules.) Winning stories may also be featured on the Retreat West blog. 
 
The deadlines and themes for the first three competitions are:
 
1. Theme: Shopping. Deadline: 03 March 2013. Judge: Debi Alper

2. Theme: A walk. Deadline: 30 April 2013. Judge: Isabel Costello

  Entry fee: £3.00

 
3. Theme: A pet. Deadline: 30 June 2013. Judge: Jane Rusbridge

  Entry fee: £3.00
 
 
4. Theme: A map. Deadline: 31 August 2013. Judge: Shaun Levin
 
  Entry fee: £3.00

5. Theme: A family gathering. Deadline: 31 October 2013. Judge: Sophie Duffy

Competition Rules
  • All entries must be between 500 and 1500 words.
  • All entries must be the original, unpublished work of the author and not have won any other competitions.
  • Stories can be in any genre except Children's.
  • All entries must be received by email atamandasaint@retreatwest.co.uk by 8pm on the closing date of the competition.
  • All entries must be as Word or PDF attachments to the email - no links to download from the Cloud please.
  • Please include a cover page with your name, email and brief biography (and blog address and Twitter name if you have one) and include page numbers and the story title only on the manuscript pages.
  • The competition entry fee of £3 must be paid via PayPal and the confirmation code included in the entry email.
  • Multiple entries are allowed but must be submitted in individual emails and paid for individually.
  • Winners and runners up will be notified and announced within 30 days of the closing dates.
  • By entering the competition you agree to allow your story to be published on the website and in the e-book.
  • Winning entries will receive a 5% share of the profits of the e-book when published and runners up will receive a 2.5% share. These payments will be accrued and paid quarterly.
