The Baltimore Review’s Summer 2015 Contest. Deadline: May 31.

General Submission Guidelines

An old Baltimore Review cover

Please review the editors' preferences and tips to writers. We may not be able to completely pin down what we want—and we do want to be taken pleasantly by surprise—but you may find the quotes helpful.

When you submit your work, please include a brief bio to introduce yourself.

If your work is accepted for publication, we ask only for the right to publish it for the first time, on the Web and in print. Please do not submit work that has been published elsewhere. All rights revert to the author after publication by The Baltimore Review. All accepted work will be archived on the website.

Simultaneous submissions are permitted. If you need to withdraw your work, or part of your work, from consideration, please do so through Submittable. You may withdraw one or two poems from consideration by including a note in Submittable rather than emailing us. We accept submissions only through the link at the bottom of this page. Submissions in more than one category are permitted, but please do not submit work more than once per reading period.

Submission periods are August 1 through November 30 and February 1 through May 31. At this time, the Video category remains open year-round. We have also opened a new category, "Pay the Writers. Get Some Writing Ideas for Yourself." Contribute $8 toward paying writers, and we'll send you a thank-you batch of writing ideas. For additional information, click Submit below and see each category.

You will be notified of our decision within three months. Really. We're aiming for a response time well within that timeframe. If you don't hear from us within three months, please contact us.

The website will be updated quarterly with new poems, stories, and creative nonfiction. Our video category opened with the spring 2012 issue. You will see additional details for each category when you click the Submit button below; please note word limits. Winning contest entries are published in winter and summer issues, along with non-theme submissions. Contest themes are announced on our blog, on our Facebook page, and on the Submit page for the Contest category during the Contest submission period.

Payment for general submissions is Web exposure and a copy of the compilation in which the author's work appears. In addition, we are now able to provide contributors with a small payment for their work ($40 Amazon gift certificate or $40 through PayPal, if preferred), and we hope to continue this as long as funding is available. We also nominate our contributors' work for every possible prize, and we send copies of the print compilation to the Best American series and other prize anthologies.

Now reading for the summer 2015 issue.

We consider both theme and non-theme submissions for the contest (summer) issue.

The theme for The Baltimore Review’s summer 2015 contest is "Crime."

Why?

You may have been the victim of a crime. You may have committed a crime. Maybe a petty crime. That lipstick in Woolworth's you slipped into your pocket back in 7th grade. OK. Petty. But still a crime. You can't look at any of the news websites without learning about some crime. Try it. How many crimes can you read about in a matter of minutes--no--seconds? Such a continuum of criminal acts. From the most petty to crime on a global scale. With such a range of consequences--and creative writing possibilities.

As long as you incorporate the idea of crime in your poem, short story, or creative nonfiction, you're good.

Three winners will be selected from among all entries. So winners could be one story and two poems; or two stories and one work of creative nonfiction; or one story, one poem, one work of creative nonfiction—you get the picture.

3,000-word limit for fiction and creative nonfiction. One to three poems in an entry. All entries considered for publication.

Prizes are $500, $200, and $100. Entry fee is $10. All contest entries, regardless of genre, should be submitted through this Contest link.

Deadline is May 31, 2015.

Final judge: Sujata Massey.
